Hi, I would like to invite all Malaysians to take part in a self funded photography project entitled “My@Manchester 2009″ (Malaysian at Manchester 2009). This is a collection of portraits of Malaysian in Manchester appearing in their homes, in the city, or doing something relevant to their interests, or anything that we can imagine. I hope that I could get as many participants as possible and challenge me for interesting portfolio. In return, the participants will be given access to the web gallery for all the images in the session.

Here is some info about this project :
The photography session will be provided free of charge.
Participants will be given access to web gallery images. You can use the photos for facebook, blog, avatar, etc
Photography session can be arranged to suit individual time
The duration of each photography session will be kept minimum.(15 – 60 minutes)
You can bring along friends along if you prefer group pic.
Also, I may use the images to create a self publish book. This book will be remembered as a memory for the participants and appreciation of this project. The self publish book will sold at reasonable price.

I intended to shoot a couple of portraits with Shikin for my upcoming project later but ended up with a lot of photos of 4 very sporting and cool models. They are all students in Manchester and obviously they are very good in front of the camera. We had fun shooting at this odd location in Whitworth Park. I surveyed the area beforehand and thought this might work for the photo shoot. I thought shooting in the park may not necessarily have to include the green grass and trees. The place is right behind Whitworth Gallery and is under the shade of a big tree. Sometimes the sun ray poke through the leaves and hit the subject faces, which made the exposure a little bit trickier. I just waited for the sunlight to move away and then go on with the portraitures.

Shikin. Somehow, I found out that this pose works for most of my female subjects.

Syed Hadi. I told him to think of images from a cover album. We got it right!

Mira, a natural in front of the camera. I turned her image to B & W just to give a different taste.

And group photo.

I’ve created a new page to display the location of Malaysian portraits in Manchester 2009 here.
The rest of the images:
Pekena Teh Tarik @ Manchester memang pengalaman yang lain. Minum kat dalam, bukan kat luar. Takde big screen bola dan takde Macha yang sibuk ke sana sini ambik order. Asap kuali dgn asap rokok jauh takde. It’s a little restaurant called Little Fusion with a number of heavy Malaysian Dishes. Nasi Lemak..Kuey Tiaw..Mi Kari. Mak Aih, menu macam menarik…atau adakah indah khabar dari rupa. Teh tariknya memang indah khabar. Dengan buih yang tebal yang tak pernah ditengok (confirm pakai fresh milk) dan rasa manis yang flat. (Teh tarik punya manis memang mencengkam tekak manisnya). Tapi…the best so far..

Waiter dia ni pun boleh cakap Melayu gak. Tak sempat nak borak dgn dia, either student Malaysian atau memang pekerja di situ. Cool guy!

Actually we had this dinner to say farewell to two young ladies who will be going back to Malaysia. They didn’t complain much on the food cause they will get the ‘real’ one pretty soon.
As I had expected, the lighting inside the restaurant is not ‘user friendly’ to camera. Adding into the equation, they had this bold red ceiling, really nice to add a reddish cast to the ladies. Fortunately, I used the light colored wall on camera left and low shutter speed to register some downlights. Although I can notice red cast on the subject, I think it’s acceptable.

Di luar, orang-orang tua akan marah kalau anak-anak keluar malam tak tentu arah sebab dah gelap. Tapi sekarang ni..pukul 9:30 pun boleh nampak langit lagi. Camno?

This is direct flash with dome diffuser. I got nothing to bounce onto. Some burning applied across the wooden fence to withdraw the distraction. 30 feet down the road, the flash hit the reflector and bring uncomfotable unwanted attention. I learned a very important point to consider when lining up people while using a direct flash. The faces shouldn’t block each other to receive the light. The harsh shadow will definitely spoil the picture.

On the way back from Sheffield to Manchester, we stopped by the lake for some pictures. We didn’t realize we broke into a private property area. However the owner who just got back from fishing gave us 2 minutes to finish the photo shoot. I had this shot set up in just 2 minutes..
Head on for individual shots for these guys..

Macam celebritiy Hong Kong bah..

After the 2 minutes ended, we continued shooting from outside the wall.

Albert…If I’m not mistakenlah..:)

I dig the shoes.
